Week 1: Saturday, October 7th, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

In Hiking 101, we will cover the essentials of what to have in a daypack and in a backpacker's gear list. We will also learn about map and compass skills so that we don’t get lost out on the trail. We will then go out and use our newfound skills hiking on the Hickory property.

    Week 2: Saturday, October 14th, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Knots and shelter building will focus on rope, the different kinds of rope, and what we can do with it in the forest. We will use our ropes to practice knot tying, and when we have some of the basics down, we will go off to find a spot to build a wilderness overnight shelter and how our ropes will help us in that.

    Week 2: Saturday, October 21st, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

In this class, we will focus on fire building. We will learn different stoves to use and will start fires using different methods, including bow drills and flint and steel. We will be practicing the different ways to build fires and talk about the best ways to cook over a fire, such as a grill or a tripod that we will build to boil water.

    Saturday, October 28th, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

In this class, we will be exploring the property as we identify and record in our nature journals what we come across and the different methods of recording data while learning about the uses of these organisms. We will provide the materials to make our own nature journals, and we'll then go out and collect samples to put in the journals. We will learn to identify and record the moving organisms that inhabit the property. We will look at tracking, how to cast a mold of a paw print, identifying bird calls, and discuss the different types of shelters that animals use.
